Series LA CHAUDIÈRE, 2005

​

The « sentō » Japanese public baths appeared in the eighth century. Today, although their number is decreasing, they form a mixed democratic islet in which the young and the old, the manager and the worker, the employee and the retired, purify their bodies and souls. Through the peephole, the gaze of the artist experiences the privilege of not existing for the other. And despite the embarrassment that springs at first sight, what is more extraordinary than what is given to see: the intimacy of a civilization. Intrigued by these non-existent public baths in Geneva, she seeks to capture their essence, their primary function.

Les «sentō», bains publics japonais, apparurent au VIIIe siècle. Aujourd’hui, bien que leur nombre s’amenuise, ils forment un îlot démocratique mixte dans lequel le jeune et le vieux, le cadre et l’ouvrier, la travailleuse et la retraitée s’épurent corps et âmes. À travers l’œilleton, le regard de l’artiste expérimente le privilège de ne pas exister pour l’autre. Et malgré la gêne qui jaillit de prime abord, quoi de plus extraordinaire que ce qui est donné à voir : l’intimité d’une civilisation. Intriguée par ces bains publics inexistants à Genève, elle cherche à capter leur essence, leur fonction première.
